There are innumerable expansions of God just like waves in the ocean. The first expansion is called prakāśa. Then Sankarṣaṇa, Vāsudeva, Aniruddha, Pradyumna, like that. Then there are sub-divisions: prābhava, vaibhava. In this way there are thousands of expansions. We living entities are also expansions of God, but we are separated expansions. Just like our hand or head is part and parcel of our body, it is like direct expansion. And from that parts there are so many hairs. That is separated expansion of expansion. Just as my head. We can cut our hair, but cannot cut our head or throat.
There are two categories of expansions God – svāṁśa, personal expansion, and separated expansion. The personal expansions are called viṣṇu-tattva and living entities are jiva tattva, separated expansions. In this way, God is person and his personal expansions are unlimited – Viṣṇu-tattva forms which are worshipable. Other tattvas like śakti-tattva and jīva-tattva are meant for service. But all together they are taken as one. That is Absolute Truth. So there are many different philosophical views of the Absolute Truth, how He is one with the energies and separated expansions. In this way, everyone is expansion from the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
